The gas you use has a huge impact on the liquid you pour. And mishandling it can be costly too, seeing as one bad gas cylinder can ruin 10 kegs. Our guide not only talks about the relationship between gas and dispense, but also tells you how to keep handle your gas safely.
Follow recommended methods, such as chaining up, to secure your gas bottles. If you can’t store your gas cylinders vertically then lie them down instead. Remember - gas bottles in use should be stored vertically. Make sure the bottles you’re delivered are labeled, food graded and have the correct test date.
Getting slow or no dispense? I know it's simple but is the keg empty? Flat beer? It could be from gas not reaching the keg. As for fobbing beer, it could be due to using the wrong gas type.
In general, it’s good practice to turn off the gas at the end of the day in case there’s a leak (but only in a refrigerated cellar).
Check the gas valves to see which bottles are empty. Make sure you’ve closed the valve before disconnecting. Double check that your replacement bottle is of the right type, in top shape and that the test ring is in date.
Carefully loosen the nut on the gas valve connecting it to the old bottle. Once you’ve checked that the sealing washer is in place and not worn, connect the new bottle and tighten the nut – but not too tight. Finally, open the gas bottle valve.
If you suspect a leak, turn off your gas, ventilate the area and then call Innserve on 0845 601 5959 (Option 1).

Release the pressure in the line by using the pressure relief valve if fitted, or by depressing a keg coupler. Disconnect the bottle by turning the nut anti-clockwise. First check that the new bottle’s “o” ring seal is in place, then connect the bottle and tighten the nut hand tight. Check that the pressure relief valve and keg couplers are in the closed position. Then open the gas bottle valve.
